Scaling up qualitative mathematics education research through Artificial Intelligence methods

2-7
 ABSTRACT:

New Artificial Intelligence methods hold the potential to transform qualitative research in mathematics education. This study introduces and uses the machine learning technology of simple neural networks to automatically analyse transcript data. This serves as the basis to reflect on the use of machine learning technology in order to uncover some of its potentials. Implications include the possibility of increasing the scale at which qualitative research takes place, as well as a new form of objectivity created by sharing the technology performing the basic analysis.
