Two layers of mathematical argumentation: dialogic and dialectic | 18-23 | |
ABSTRACT: The research on mathematical argumentation has mainly adopted a dialectic lens which focuses on understanding the abstract and logical development of reasoning in argumentation. However, this approach may have overlooked other key aspects of mathematical argumentation, including the unfolding of the meaning-making experience and process during argumentation – a concern that aligns with a more dialogical approach. These two approaches have often been pitted against each other, but I question the value of such comparison and also challenge the assumption that they can be distinguishable. Consequently, this paper proposes a stratigraphic approach in exploring how the dialectic and dialogic layers might coexist in mathematical argumentation and discuss the possible tensions that comes along with their coexistence. |
