39-44
 ABSTRACT:

The relation between the functions of an algebraic expression in the context of a didactic situation and the meanings that might be elaborated are investigated in this article. In a paper describing research done on generalization in the context of patterns, Radford (2003a) shows that two symbolic expressions of the same pattern are considered to be different by the students and this seems to be because these expressions express a set of completely different actions. How can it be favoured the passage of this level of generalization into another which implies the use of formal calculations?First, we are going to analyse certain difficulties associated with the algebraic expressions produced in the context of the introduction to algebra -algebraic expressions seen as symbolic expressions- taking into account the possibilities of actions that the problems of patterns encompass. Then we are going to bring up the notion of didactic situation (Brousseau, 1998) in order to study the didactic conditions that could favour the use of other significations of the algebraic expressions.-algebraic expressions as calculus instruments- i.e., other roles of these mathematic objects in the decisions of an specific situation. It is our hypothesis that to work on the validation of modeling formulas may constitute a didactic space inside which the algebraic instrument would go beyond its aspect of symbolic expression introducing the students to the syntactic analysis.RésuméNous abordons le lien entre les fonctions d'une expression algébrique dans le contexte d'une situation didactique et les significations qui pourraient être élaborées.
